A geographical Indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products that have a specific geographical location and possess qualities or a reputation that attribute to a specific geographical origin (e.g. a town, region, or country).
There is a prominent link between the product and its original place of production since the qualities depend on the geographical place of production.
A GI registration acts as a certificate and ensures that similar products from elsewhere cannot be sold under the same name.
There are several products which may constitute of a Geographical Indication. These include agricultural products, edible items, wine, spirit drinks and handicrafts.
Validity of a GI Registration
A GI registration is valid for 10 years, after which it can be renewed subsequently.
